The Philharmonia is a team of 80 musicians, of 16 different nationalities. Santtu-Matias Rouvali is our Principal Conductor. We are Resident Orchestra at the Southbank Centre in the heart of London, and also have residencies in Bedford, Canterbury, Leicester, Basingstoke, at Garsington Opera and the Three Choirs Festival.
We tour all over Europe, and to the USA, Japan and China, and our online performances are enjoyed by listeners from Fiji, Sudan and Indonesia to the Arctic Circle in Norway.

Artist in Residence 2024/25: Vidya Patel
The Philharmonia Orchestra is pleased to announce Vidya Patel as its Artist in Residence for the 2024/25 season. The Philharmonia’s Artist in Residence programme sees a collaboration between an artist of a non-classical music background and the Orchestra, to explore and combine two differing art forms and celebrate each other’s artistic creativity. Vidya’s residency marks the fourth year of the Artist in Residence initiative, which has previously featured House of Absolute (21/22), Love Ssega (22/23) and Soumik Datta (23/24).
Vidya will be working with the Philharmonia over the next 12 months to develop a new project that blends together her practice of dance, movement and choreography with classical music. She will explore, with Philharmonia musicians, themes of belonging, identity and global humanity, through collaborative creative sessions and performances. Through this collaboration, Vidya hopes to question and challenge the relationship between audience and performers, exploring the connection between dance artists, musicians, stage design and the space around us.

I love this brief yet thorough explanation of the viola! I was also quite impressed with the playing, too
Grenadier guards
As I mature I really like the music from this genious musician more and more. 🙏🎵❤
Ancient persian music is so soul burning with double bass!
Also the choir piece "O God Beyond All Praising"

Yesterday, June 28, 2024, I attended a performance of Mahler's Third featuring Sarah Conelly. Two local orchestras from Asturias in Spain teamed up under the conductor Lucas Macías. It was a very elegant performance. Everything was where it belonged, but it was lacking in intensity, at least for my liking. I got blurry vision in some of the passages sung by Sarah. I spoke to her briefly after the concert, I mentioned that she almost saved the day, and that with Mahler one has to be willing to roll up their sleeves and eat with their hands, to put it graphically. I attended a couple of performances of Mahler symphonies (6th and 5th) conducted by Lorin Maazel back in the 1990s. A solid conductor. It's a pity he left us at only 79, considering that his father nearly reached 100.
Sorry, it's Connolly. My surname often gets slaughtered, so I should takew care not to do the same to others.
Last night in the Kurhaus of Wiesbaden - Bruce Liu in Concert - my goodness ! This man plays the piano, but even more touches your soul ! What an artist - what a talent !
The ending is amazing. I have heard hundreds of Mahler 3s and this is the first time that I have heard the bass drum double the last five timpani strikes. Genius, Esa-Pekka. San Francisco will miss you.
What a music powerplant, what a delightful person! Gabriel Yared is simply ... Great! Thanks for such an amazing interview 🙏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
That was so good!
Wonderful performances and explanations. At this moment, I do regret retiring from Oboe & Cor Anglais. My first teacher, Carlos Mullenix, stressed that we are singing through our instruments. Thank you.
Where was this filmed please.
Energetic and youthful Beethoven - looking forward to it!😄😄
Philharmonia Orchestra are agents of the sublime along with Aaron Copland.
I love "process" videos - videos in which you can watch the art being made - if you hear the sound, you see the sound - and this one is spectacular!
Hauntingly beautiful music.
言葉は正しく理解できませんが、ラフマニノフとてもすばらしい音色です。
There should be more music in the world, we have become too economy and GDP oriented societies. There is no balance, no relaxation, just hustling. These people bring so much joy to the world.
23 mins but sounded like 15 mins. Mark of a great definitive rendition
I know you
Hi vidya
On ne se lasse jamais de revenir à Ravel. Ravel c’est l’éternelle poésie de l’enfance. Ravel est peut-être le plus merveilleux compositeur de tous les temps de toutes les cultures.
A beautiful performance. Thank you UA-cam!
Thanks for listening!
Inspired by this etherial music whilst an exchange teacher in North America in 1954.
😊
4:36 la do do do do do do do la do do do do do do do
I was listening to this movement the other day, and suddenly my younger brother appears and says to me: "that song sounds like Christmas gossip"... I don't think I've ever heard such an intriguing definition.
She's a pleasure to listen to
❤
thankyou very much.
Enjoyed this very much, thank you.
This video is why i choose the tuba
Wow, that's great to hear! We wish you the best with your tuba study.
@philharmonia_orchestra thanks! I'm playing the tuba great and I made sure I had band for the 8th!
Son muy interesantes los cambios rítmicos que se producen poco a poco
Appalachian SPRING was my Dad's favorite piece I miss him so much
I absolutely LOVE the sound of the euphonium! So warm smooth and beautiful; you have such a lovely tone and you play gorgeously. I play trumpet. I would love to learn the euphonium and another favourite, the French horn but I just don't think I'd have enough time to practice and learn another instrument and still keep up with my trumpet practice ..so, I'll just have enjoy listening. I wonder how the resonance must feel when playing a clear low tone. I bet it's quite the feeling. I bet it is similar to what I experienced once while new a very large African lion when he was making a low call and the sound from his lungs I could feel vibrate or resonate in my whole being, especially my chest. I loved learning all about the tubing, thank you. You have so much more range of octaves than the trumpet. I am hoping someday to get a good flugelhorn. Playing it would be very much like the trumpet but, with that lovely low round sound. I am blessed with many trumpets, two of which are some of the best horns made in their time. My father in law played trumpet and he gave me his favourite and several others. His favourite dates back to 1933, when this make was improved greatly and was the best trumpet of that time. In fact it is still considered one of the best. But there are not many left in pristine condition. My instrument was keep in pristine condition. It is silver and has beautiful fine etchinģ art deco design and the whole trumpet has art deco design. This trumpet is King. I also have a beautiful pristing vintage silver Couesnon. It can be changed from a Bb trumpet to a concert C trumpet. There is another very interesting vintage piece I have is what I was told is a slide trumpet but, is actually a saprano trombone. I do know where I could any information on how to play it. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction so I could learn this cute little horn. Well, I have written too much. God bless you and again I say, your playing is an absolutely beautiful! ✝️🕊🙏🏻❤☘
J’ai acheter et travailler la partition Cor d’harmonie de ce Chef d’œuvre. J’aurai aimé l’interpréter avec un orchestre … dans une autre vie …
I went to college in Virginia near the foothills of the Appalachian Range. I studied Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring " in music history class. Hearing it these many years later as conducted by Santtu-Matias Rovali has been wonderful. Coincidentally I also heard part of it elsewhere on UA-cam today, as the musical introduction to the CBS Reports feature on General Eisenhower and Walter Cronkite's return to Normandy Beach during the 20th anniversary of D-Day in June 1964.
So if it goes as high as a bassoon... but of course goes so much lower, why aren't all bassoonists playing the contra? Would seem to give far more options? Out is it a tonal preference issue? The contra is also harder to intonate, no? Anyway, I love the instrument. So expensive though... I'd play one if someone gave it to me! But the cost is prohibitive otherwise...
Thank you so much for sharing this! So interesting! And her movements are just gorgeous!
I once heard this whilst visiting Winchester Cathedral. An orchestra was rehearsing for a concert that evening . The whole building literally vibrated with this exquisite music. People were standing stock still and some of us were reduced to tears by the beauty of it. I have never experienced anything like it before or since that was quite as profoundly moving. THis version is simply wonderful and comes pretty close to that which I experienced in Winchester.
What a lovely memory. Thank you for sharing. We are thrilled that our performance was moving for you as well.
@@philharmonia_orchestra I should add that this recording is a piece I play often, especially after a stressful day. It brings me joy, so thank you All
What is the name of the raag which he played in introduction?
The fact that this video has more views than the violin one is really funny. Justice for the violas!!!
Thank you soooooo much! :-)
It's interesting that people talk about this 'forgotten' concerto. My dear friend Shura Cherkassky was the one who played and recorded it and brought it to the attention of the public, after it had long been forgotten. He played it remarkably (and individually - as only Shura could do!!). Now however we have many pianists play it. This is wonderful but, in my opinion, Alexandre Kantorow is the absolute king of this piece now
Why isn't the timpani there?
What a beautiful show, in the same way is wonderful surname Patel you from with India ?🥰🤗
Scotland...."Beauty, but in a darker sense of beauty."
